Convert quart (US) to cup (US)

What is a quart?

A quart belongs to the traditional units that are still common in different English-speaking countries for measuring both liquids and solids.

In general, it is equal to 2 pints or a quarter of a gallon:

1 qt = 2 pints = ¼ gallon

Historically, a gallon was the first option that appeared and it meant 8 pounds of wheat. Then, a pint was introduced into practice as a 1/8 part of the gallon and later a quart was derived from it.

However, products other than wheat were also measured that led to the diversity of meanings for all these options. Modern quart has three basic options:

• 1 US dry quart equals 1.1012209 liters;
• 1 US quart for liquids corresponds to 0.9463 liters;
• 1 English imperial quart is the same as 1.1365 liters.

Thus, when one encounters volume or mass in quarts, it is worth checking which one was mentioned.

What is a cup?

Among non-systematic units for volume evaluation, there is such an interesting option as cups. They are most often utilized in cooking and recipes. It may be convenient to measure the volume of some product with a cup. In addition, there is no need to be very accurate and precise in the amount required.

However, there is a trick with cups due to some cultural and traditional differences. Thus, there are at least four different values for this unit, namely:

• European or metric corresponds to 250 ml;
• American or cup (US) ranges from 237 to 240 ml;
• English is equal to 284 ml;
• Japanese is only 200 ml.

Altogether, we observe quite a big difference in 50 ml between Japanese and European cups and this can be crucial for the recipe. Furthermore, products with different grinding will differ in their values, both in volume and mass. That is why it is better always to check which cup was mentioned in the recipe.
